At Woodbury Staffing, we try to provide advice to candidates looking for jobs. It is our goal to match candidates to the best opportunities. We have found over time that candidates are not putting themselves in the best light. So we will be providing some advice we learned to facilitate the process.
The first step in the interview process is to write a resume that positions you for an interview. If you focus your resume on getting a job, you may miss out on the interview. If you aim too high, you may not achieve your first goal.
Most people are unaware of the goal in writing a resume. As a result, you have resumes that are too long and detailed and the recruiter loses interest within seconds.
In preparing your resume, please keep these ideas in mind:
- Know and back up your qualities and strengths
- Incorporate the right keywords into your resume
- Use tight and effective job titles. Avoid generic labels
- In structuring your resume, highlight the most important first.
- Revise your resume for each employer to tailor your skill sets to that position and employer
- Avoid lies in your resume especially in light of the extensive HR usage of background checks
- Keep your resume short, ideally 1 or 2 pages
- Proofread your resume at least three times over two days.

ReplyDeleteAs a former Resume Specialist, my advice to job seekers is this: Don't do it yourself! By enlisting someone else to prepare your resume you are more likely to come out with the real you. Many times, in my experience job seeks, especially ones who do not change jobs frequently, down-play their skills and critical roles they have played in the companies that they have work for. Did you know that by just being an honest, dependable, dedicated, worker you have added stability to the company you worked for. And that by following business protocol and passing on work you have mastered that you are lending yourself to mentoring and easing the work load off your supervisor, allowing them to have extra time to commit to more daunting task on their agenda! It's true! There is more to a resume than skills and work duties. Your cover letter is the key to conveying those personal traits that you can bring to company. Resumes should read easy, they are generally scanned through for the most part, used as a tool to weed out less attractive offers. So yours needs to be concise, accurate, and inclusive. Bullet items that are redundant in nature instead of saying over and over, I was responsible for.... Group like-skills, such as computer programs, or manufacturing machines, office equipment, certificates, etc. don't spread them out through the resume. Always offer dates and locations of work assignments, do not include jobs that were off-career if they do not need to be there. You can explain a gap in career type employment with one line you do not need to list the entire skill set or job description if it does not pertain to your new quest. Be original if possible, computer generate resumes are okay if you do not have the skill to do one yourself, but they often lend the recruiter to wonder if the resume was really "You" or someone else’s resume copy and pasted. They give 'reviews' with 5 star ratings to their companies, or to companies which have paid (usually several hundred dollars per month!) to be included on this list!resume build
